Beeman QB78? It's going to happen!

Here's the official statement about a name change coming for QB78 family air rifles.

S/R Industries, the owner of the Marksman/Beeman brands and subsidiary of SAG (Shanghai Airgun Company), the owner of Industry Brand, announce that their range of CO2-powered air rifles will henceforth be sold under the Beeman brand and no longer as Industry Brand products.

Specifically, this Beeman QB78 air rifle branding change affects the following CO2-powered air rifles: QB78, QB78 Deluxe, QB79, AR2078A and AR2079A.

The reasons for this change are two-fold:

1. The renewed popularity of these air rifles.

2. To develop a more consistent brand story.

S/R Industries plans a rolling change from Industry Brand to Beeman QB78 air rifle branding, the timing will be as inventory of Industry Brand products has been depleted.

The initial inventory of Beeman-branded products will be in brown boxes with the product having the Beeman logo. Subsequent products will come in retail packaging.

Archer Airguns knows of no change to the air rifles themselves, the only change is branding. My guess is that it could take some months for this branding change to be implemented.

Some Long Lost Friends Back in Stock!

After a long break, I'm pleased - and relieved - to be able to say that we have a number of sought-after products back in stock at Archer Airguns.

Among the highlights are the re-appearance of QB57 complete barrel assemblies.

As the QB57 has a "takedown" configuration, that's a particularly valuable benefit.

Also back again after years - literally - are the RAP4 On/Offs with Gauge. This product can be attached to a CO2 tank, or the Ninja HPA Regulated Tank we sell for the QB79, and allows the tank to be removed from the air rifle without the need for depressurization.

The container containing our guns was stuck in the port for nearly 2 months, so the QB78s only arrived here yesterday.

Improved Open Sights Fitted to QB78 Repeater by Customer

Archer Airguns customer Ron R. was disappointed that his QB78 Repeater was not fitted with open sights. The latest batch of .22 caliber QB78 Repeaters is fitted with 15mm diameter barrels and muzzle brakes, instead of 14mm barrels and open sights.

So he decided to install an Industry Brand Rear Field Sight on the Repeater breech and a QB78 Deluxe fiber optic front sight on the muzzle brake.

As neither of these parts is an exact "drop in" fit, Ron made a little project of this, with good results as you can see.

The Rear Field Sight required some work with a triangular needle file so that it would fit the contours of the QB78 Repeater breech.





For the front sight, Ron used the technique shown in this YouTube video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBHOay8TAiI but applied it to the front sight matching the muzzle weight, instead of a rear sight to the breech as shown.

Cock on Opening Mod Kit Now Available for QB78 Type Air Rifles.

New from Archer Airguns is an upgrade kit that converts QB78, QB79, Tech Force 78 and TF79 models to cock on opening operation.

This upgrade can be installed on new QB78, QB79, AR2078, AR2078A and AR2079 air rifles purchased from Archer Airguns. Alternatively it can be purchased in "kit only" form for you to install on your own air rifle. Full instructions are included in the kit and the photographs here will also help.



Many QB78 shooters have always wanted a "cock on opening" version of their air rifles, but previously this has been available only as a specialist conversion from dedicated airgun tuners. The big issue is that the QB78 hammer needs to be drilled for revised placement of the hammer pin - and it's INCREDIBLY hard!

Archer Airguns has made a "production" cock on opening conversion kit available for the first time ever. Installation is a simple drop in process, as can be seen from the photographs below.





In addition, the Archer Airguns cock on opening conversion kit also minimizes the problem with previous cock on opening mods in that it's very easy to load pellets. There's still 13/32-inch available for pellet loading, as the photograph below shows.



This kit also fits the Crosman 160 and is also the first time - to my knowledge - that a cock on opening kit has been made available for that classic old air rifle.

New Low Cost QB78 Scope Combos Now Available.

New at Archer Airguns are two new air rifle scope combos; one for the QB78, the other for the QB78 Deluxe.

The QB78 air rifle scope combo includes a QB78 air rifle in either .177 or .22 caliber, plus a 3-9 x 32 scope and low mount rings. This combo sells for just $109.99. All you need to do is to mount the scope and rings following my instructional videos on YouTube.



Also available is a QB78 Deluxe scope combo. This combo includes a QB78 Deluxe, together with a 3-12 x 40 scope and low rings. This combo is just $123.99. You can see it in the photograph below.



Both the 3-9 x 32 and 3-12 x 40 scopes are bargain priced. They have fixed focus, however it's possible to adjust this on a "one time" basis by removing the front ring of the scope and carefully turning the lens. This can reduce the minimum focusing distance considerably, if you wish. Both scopes are supplied with "bikini" lens covers and covers for the click-adjustable elevation and windage turrets.

These scopes are also available separately. In this way they are ideal for use with existing CO2 air rifles such as the QB78, QB79, Tech Force TF78, Umarex Fusion and Xisico XS60C. The photo below shows the 3-12 x 40 scope.

New Archer Airguns Universal Muzzle Brake for Airguns With 15mm Diameter Barrels.

Just introduced is a new, improved muzzle brake from Archer Airguns, with two setscrews for more secure fixing.




This universal muzzle brake is CNC-manufactured from solid steel with a deep blued finish. The length is 4-inches and outside diameter is 0.855-inches. Weight is approximately 6 ounces. It's supplied with 2 setscrews and a hex wrench.

Apart from looking very cool, this muzzle brake usually makes a significant improvement in accuracy of an airgun by reducing barrel harmonics when the gun is fired.

This solid steel, blued muzzle break fits a huge number of air rifles and pistols having the very common 15mm diameter barrel (15mm is .0590 inches, approximately 19/32-inch), including the following models:

- Beeman 1073, Grizzly, Kodiak and similar air rifles.
- Ruger Air Hawk and Blackhawk.
- Crosman Optimus, Quest and Phantom air rifles.
- Stoeger X10 and X20.
- QB78 Deluxe, QB79, AR2078, AR2078A, AR2079 air rifles.
- Tech Force TF79, TF89, TF78T and TF78GS air rifles.

Installation may require an existing front sight to be removed from the barrel, so it’s suitable for use only if a scope or red dot sight is fitted to the airgun. Many plastic sight assemblies can be removed by first backing-out the clamping setscrews (if fitted), carefully warming the part with a domestic hair dryer (NOT a heat gun) and driving off using a piece of soft wood as a drift.

A New PCP Target Air Rifle - The AR2079B.

Our photograph above shows the Shanghai Airguns AR2079B target air rifle in PCP configuration.

Just like other members of the QB79 family, the sidelever AR2079B can be configured with a Ninja 13/300 Regulated HPA tank and Archer Airguns QB79 Paintball Tank Adapter to work perfectly with high pressure air as a PCP. This gives a low cost way to obtain an accurate and useful target rifle for airgunners, although the stock design means that it's suitable for right-handed shooters only. Sorry lefties!

The AR2078B uses a lever action for bolt operation. This is the smoothest and easiest-cocking version of the QB78 family and every one comes with a test target from the Shanghai factory as a proof of accuracy.

Below we have a factory test target and an Archer Airguns Gold Service test target for the same gun - shot on CO2 - that indicates the accuracy potential for the AR2078B. Both targets are 10 shot groups fired at 10 yards. Please note that the targets are not reproduced at the same scale, the Shanghai target is actually less than half the size of the Gold Service target.

Manuel's QB79 Project.

"Stephen:

Recently you sold me a new long tube, a tube cap, seals and a strap assembly to modify a leaking QB79 air rifle.  I wanted to bring it back to a QB78 style.



You were right, it was a nice project, and it came out perfect.  Here a few pictures of the modification I made.  The stock is from a 13 year old QB78; there was nice wood under the original paint.  The scope is an inexpensive 3-7X20mm.  The picture of the targets reflects six 10 shot groups at 55 feet (my back yard width) at 63 degrees; 65 total useable shots; the bottom 5 are the last of the CO2.
 


I am very happy with the results; I love the QB78!

QB78 Repeater Test With Cock On Opening Mod.

The new cock on opening version of the QB78 - and QB79 - Repeater allows a very wide variety of pellets to be used.

Crosman Premier Hollow Points work just as well as with the cock on closing version, but many other pellets - all the ones we've tried so far - feed very well, too. The cock on opening version really is the "universal" Repeater if you want to shoot a variety of pellets!



The QB78 Repeater tested for this post.

Following are the results of some tests with a standard QB78 Repeater in .177 cal (the lowest cost model), when equipped with the cock on opening mod.

The fps figures are given for 75 degrees F with .177 cal pellets.

805 fps - Gamo Raptor Gold pellets, 5.0 Grains (alloy)
795 fps - Stoeger X-Speed pellets, 5.56 Grains (alloy)
742 fps - RWS Hobby pellets, 7.0 Grains (fastest lead pellets)
725 fps - Stoeger X-Sport pellets, 7.48 Grains
705 fps - Crosman Premier Hollow Point pellets, 7.9 Grains
697 fps - Stoeger X-Match pellets, 8.18 Grains
687 fps - Stoeger X-Field (H&N Field Target Trophy) pellets, 8.64 Grains
629 fps - Stoeger X-Power pellets, 10.19 Grains
611 fps - Stoeger X-Magnum pellets, 11.57 Grains

As these figures show, all versions of the QB78 Repeater and QB79 Repeater also offer an increased muzzle velocity of 100 fps compared to a gun in regular factory condition (when shooting the same pellets), so you gain 10 shot repeating capability as well as a significant increase in muzzle velocity with our Repeater Upgrades.

Most airgun makers play the "muzzle velocity game" using Hobbys for their claimed "with lead" muzzle velocity. On the same "industry standard" basis, the QB78 Repeater can now be specified at a muzzle velocity of 740 fps with lead and 800 fps with alloy pellets at 75 degrees F. (Of course, the numbers would be even higher at higher temperatures).

Mike's AR2079B with Tethered Tank.

Archer Airguns customer Mike, sent this information about his AR2079B air rifle.

Mike writes...

"I started shooting the AR2079B with the Dual 12G CO2 Adapter holding 2 x 12 gram Powerlets. This worked fine, however it was good for 40 shots.

I am shooting Metallic Silhouette which requires 40 shots leaving nothing for sighter targets. I like about 10 shots to sight in with. This means I would have to load two more cartridges to finish, leaving about half of the gas in the gun at the end of the match. I did not want to leave the gun charged or waste the gas.

The next step was to try a 9 ounce CO2 paintball tank. This rifle with a 9 ounce tank, valve and adapter weighs right at 11 pounds, all of it way out front.

So I went to my local paintball store, got a hose with a quick disconnect and set up the rig as you can see in the photos. This looks like it might work for me. Since I did not see anything like it on your website, I thought you might be interested."

Mike's AR2079B has an Archer Airguns Paintball Tank Adapter for QB79 fitted, with a RAP 4 On/Off Valve with Gauge. His paintball hose is attached between that and the 9-oz CO2 tank.

QB78 and QB79 Repeaters Now Available With Improved Feeding Capabilities.

The QB78 and QB79 Repeaters are now available with a choice of "cock on closing" and "cock on opening" actions.

But how to choose???

1. COCK ON CLOSING.

The "cock on closing" action is the traditional method of operation that has been used on all production QB78 type air rifles - and the Crosman 160 way back before that. The bolt opens easily but is harder to close.

In the Repeater models, it provides excellent feeding with Crosman Premier HP (particularly) and other Crosman pellets, but is not very tolerant of other pellet types. With this action, inserting or removing a magazine is easiest: the mag is simply snapped in or out, without the need to hold the bolt handle back.


2. COCK ON OPENING.

The "cock on opening" action version causes the hammer spring to be compressed on opening the bolt and thus it's harder to pull the bolt back. It does, however, close very easily. This easy bolt closing means that the "cock on opening" action is far more tolerant of different pellet types and feeds almost any type of pellet well and jam-free.

The only disadvantage - yes, there has to be one, doesn't there? - is that the bolt handle has to be held open when the magazine is inserted or removed.

Because of the feeding benefits, it's probably that most people will prefer the "cock on opening" version. Anyhow, now you have the choice!


QB78 and QB79 Repeater Upgrade Kits are still all "cock on closing" as the installation instructions need to be re-written before the new versions can be offered. We'll do that as soon as we can...

Customer Test Target from QB79 Air Rifle

"Here is a photograph of the accuracy of a QB79 .22 caliber. The gun was sighted in at 25 yards by me using Crosman HPs and a fixed 4 x 32 AO Winchester scope. The target was shot by me from a bench at 10 yds. Center to center group was three shots with CHSs to see where the pellets hit at 10 yards.

Top left Gamo 15.21 gr pointed 5 shots. Top right JSB Exact 15.6 gr dome 5 shots and lower right was H&N 12.65 gr Hp also 5 shots.

Archer Airguns built this gun for me in November with XP Tune Kit, tuned valve, HDD. You can always spend more, but for me you won't get better."

Yes, Hammers Scopes Fit the QB78 and QB78 Repeater Air Rifles.

We've had several telephone calls from customers asking the very sensible question "Do Hammers scopes - which are supplied with a one piece mount - fit on the QB78?"

Well the answer is, "Yes, they do". There's plenty of space under the scope tube to load pellets, or magazine, as appropriate.

Both the Hammers 3-9 x 32AO and 3-9 x 40AO scopes will fit on to the QB78 and QB78 Repeater breech, and there's enough range of movement for the scope in the mount to provide the correct eye relief for almost all shooters.

Hammers scopes are excellent value. They have a mil-dot reticle, AO focusing down to 5 yards and good image quality. They are supplied with a strong one-piece mount. There's no fancy features that you don't need, just a simple scope that is ideal for many airgun users. They also hold up very well to the fierce recoil of powerful spring/piston air rifles.

Detailed Performance Information for the QB79 PCP Repeater

Here's some more detailed information on performance of the QB79 PCP Repeater. In particular, this post is to show the outstanding consistency of muzzle velocity that's available with this product.

Our test results for the .177 cal QB79 PCP Repeater were recorded, fed into a spreadsheet and plotted out as a graph.



As you can see, the different tune levels were achieved in three ways.

The greatest consistency - with 168 "good" shots, but lower (760 fps) muzzle velocity is achieved using the standard factory hammer spring. This gives the most efficient performance in terms of total muzzle energy (1,669 ft/lbs - the sum of the muzzle energies for each individual shot) before reaching the 30 fps Extreme Spread shot, but the lower muzzle velocity is not what many people would prefer.

More muzzle velocity (800 fps), but less (120) good shots, is obtained by slightly shimming the hammer spring with a couple of washers. This gives less efficiency, with a total of 1,336 ft/lbs of muzzle energy before the 30 fps Extreme Spread shot.

The third level of tune combines the shimmed hammer with the Archer Airguns XP Tuned Valve. This is a real air hog, with much lower efficiency (just 842 ft/lbs total muzzle energy before the 30 fps ES), but it does deliver the highest muzzle velocity of 840 fps with 68 "good" shots - still enough to complete many field target courses without refilling with air.

Here's the test targets for the mid level (800 fps and 120 good shots testing). Each target has 5 bulls, shot in the sequence shown and with the Chrony prints stapled next to each target.







Here's the same data presented for the QB79 Repeater in .22 caliber.

The gun is more efficient in .22 caliber, with total muzzle energy of 1,844 ft/lbs for the 575 fps/180 good shots level. At 125 good shots, it's 1,700 ft/lbs total and 839 total ft/lbs for the maximum muzzle velocity (690 fps) tune level.








Please note that in all cases, these tests were made with unsorted Crosman Premier Hollow Point pellets, fired "straight from the tin" at 10yards range.

I hope this gives some useful and interesting detail to those who have questions about the performance of the QB79 PCP Repeater.

New! The QB79 PCP Repeater

This version of the QB79 Repeater uses a REGULATED Ninja High Pressure Air (HPA) tank, giving 1100 psi air pressure in the gun. The result is increased muzzle velocity and freedom from temperature changes due to rapid fire and changes in ambient temperature compared to the CO2 versions.



This has always been part of our QB78 and QB79 Repeater development plan as it's the perfect way to overcome the issues associated with rapid fire and shot consistency.

You can select from a choice of three tune options that gives your selection of shot count and muzzle velocity.

For the QB79 PCP Repeater in .177 caliber these are:
840 fps with 70 shots at better than 30 fps Extreme Spread - 12.4 ft/lbs
800 fps with 120 shots at better than 30 fps Extreme Spread - 11.2 ft/lbs
760 fps with 170 shots at better than 30 fps Extreme Spread - 10.1 ft/lbs

For the QB79 PCP Repeater in .22 caliber these are:
690 fps with 55 shots at better than 30 fps Extreme Spread - 15.1 ft/lbs
660 fps with 125 shots at better than 30 fps Extreme Spread - 13.8 ft/lbs
575 fps with 180 shots at better than 30 fps Extreme Spread - 10.5 ft/lbs

As you can see, the QB79 PCP Repeater offers between 55 and 180 shots (depending on caliber and tune level) with an Extreme Spread of 30 fps - the consistency benchmark used by precision Field Target shooters.



By using a regulated tank, the QB79 PCP Repeater gives a huge number of shots with a practically constant muzzle velocity (better than 30 fps Extreme Spread). This is a massive practical accuracy benefit when shooting the QB79 PCP Repeater. There's no way that any QB78 PCP conversion can offer this combination of shot count and consistency due to limited air capacity and lack of a regulator!

All unregulated PCP air rifles suffer from a shot curve of varying muzzle velocities which limit the (relatively small) number of shots attainable before vertical inaccuracy requires a re-charge, as Discovery and Marauder shooters know very well.



If you already have a QB79 or QB79 Repeater air rifle, we also have this regulated Ninja 13/300 HPA tank that will enable you to simply convert your gun from CO2 to PCP operation.
